Clemson-Seneca Pediatrics Internship
During the Spring of 2022, I interned from 8:00-5:00 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with Clemson-Seneca Pediatrics. Through this internship, I obtained 180 hours of clinical experience and reinforced my desire to pursue a career as a physician. This page contains various resources that display my experience as a Clemson-Seneca Pediatrics Intern.
Internship Powerpoint
This PowerPoint contains more information about my internship site, daily tasks, and projects I completed as a Clemson-Seneca Pediatrics intern.
Final Reflection/Evaluation
This document serves as a reflective summary of my internship experience. A few topics discussed include how I achieved the goals and objectives I set for myself during my internship, how a particular project helped me achieve these goals, and how my academics allowed me to succeed during this internship. Read my reflection to learn more about how this internship shaped my outlook on the healthcare field.
Projects
Food Pantry Poster
While rooming patients, one of the surveys I would distribute to parents was the Survey of Wellbeing of Young Children (SWYC) form. Each SWYC form contains age-appropriate developmental questions. I have linked an example SWYC form to the left. These forms provided insight into different aspects of the child's well-being, including child development, home problems, parental problems, and attention deficit disorders. This project relates to my Intervention Evaluation Goal and objectives: reviewing medical histories with patients. On the SWYC form, patients are asked about food insecurity. While I reviewed their medical histories and the survey responses, occasionally, food insecurity would be an issue for patients. To help facilitate the conversation between providers and patients, I wanted to create a poster about local food pantries. This way, if a patient is struggling and does not seek help, or if a patient indicates they require assistance, we will have quickly accessible information to give them.
To create the poster, I collected information about local food shelves. I then utilized the graphic design website Canva to create a poster about local food pantries. The poster contains information and directions to the closest free food pantry to Clemson-Seneca Pediatrics. There is also a QR code that provides patients with the names and locations of other food pantries in the Upstate of South Carolina. After seeking approval from my preceptor, I placed a poster in each patient care room.
Summer Safety Poster
During my internship, I noticed that the Summer Safety poster in the lobby seemed a bit outdated. After gaining permission from my preceptor to update the poster, I began working on this project. First, I collected and compiled information about sun and water safety from the Center for Disease Control. Then, I utilized the graphic design website Canva to create a new poster about summer safety. The poster contains information and directions to prevent drowning, heatstroke, and sunburns. The goal of this project was to replace the preexisting sun safety poster in the lobby with an updated version. This project relates to my Affective Goal from Form Two because I was able to reflect on my desire to pursue a career in dermatology. This connected to this future career goal because I was able to educate the patient population about skin cancer prevention.

Enfamil Formula Supply
My internship site provides baby formula samples to parents who are having difficulty obtaining the right type for their child. During a few patient interactions, I was asked by parents for a sample. However, we could not meet some requests due to our inadequate supply of baby formula. After noticing how many families were facing barriers to obtaining formula, I attempted to replenish our stockpile. To do so, I contacted Enfamil, a baby formula company, about receiving additional samples of their products to help combat these issues. I then connected to our Enfamil representative and set up a new shipment of product samples. After receiving the shipment, I organized all of our samples by expiration date and tagged them in our formula closet. This project relates to my Intervention Evaluation Goal because one objective was to review patients' medical histories. While reviewing medical records, I had to ask parents about their milk supply. These interactions helped me achieve this objective and inspired the creation of this project.
Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) Reportable Disease Form
During my time as an intern, I assisted with diagnosing a patient with a reportable infectious disease. Due to the nature of this illness, we were required to submit a report to DHEC. This notification system helps limit the spread of disease among our population. Before this patient, I had never completed one of these reports to submit to DHEC. My preceptor guided me through this entire process while educating me about the importance of reporting these diseases. After filling out the paper copy of the form, I entered the data into the electronic medical records system. An example of the information I obtained and recorded can be seen in the PDF copy of the form. This project relates to my Health Assessment Goal because I learned how to enter the patient's information and diagnosis of this reportable disease into our electronic medical records system, Epic.
